Wamarra acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands upon which we work, live and socialise. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who we recognise as Australia’s First Peoples whose cultural practices continue today.
Wamarra, alongside Symal, is proud to be delivering the first stage of the City of Melbourne’s Greenline Project along the banks of the Birrarung (Yarra River). Together, we are shaping a healthier, more connected place for community – revitalising this sacred riverbank through cultural landscaping, natural finishes and gathering spaces that honour both Wurundjeri Country and community.
Our work is grounded in respect for the Birrarung. We’re restoring the river’s edge through soft landscaping, natural materials, and infrastructure that reflect this special place’s deep cultural and environmental significance.
Building boardwalks using natural materials and finishes
Soft landscaping with native planting, meadows and biodiversity zones
Creating pathways, pavements, seating areas and places for gathering
Retaining walls and stonework features to protect and strengthen the riverbank
Lighting, drainage and essential infrastructure to make this a safe, welcoming space for all
Since breaking ground, our teams have made strong progress. Early works included site establishment and setting the foundations for boardwalks and key infrastructure, including irrigation, electrical and communications. Across the riverbank, new native planting zones are flourishing, with natural materials shaping public spaces in a way that blends seamlessly with Country.
To walk lightly on Country, we’re using specialised boring methods to protect significant trees and the sensitive riverside environment. Every step of the way, our people are protected through safe access systems like Davit Arm Fall Restraints, making sure we look after both people and place.
Every decision is made with care – working around high-value trees, sensitive habitat and busy public areas to minimise disruption while bringing new life to the iconic river’s edge. With the groundwork laid, we are now moving through the next phases of decking installation and finishing touches to the landscape.
Greenline is our chance to leave a lasting, positive legacy. By creating healthier, greener spaces along the Birrarung, we are strengthening connection to Country, creating pathways for Aboriginal employment, and building places that future generations will walk with pride.
This is what it means to walk strong on Country – building better futures, honouring culture and caring for land, water and community.
The Greenline Project is on track for completion in late 2025, delivering a space that will serve and inspire for generations to come.
