Wamarra acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands upon which we work, live and socialise. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who we recognise as Australia’s First Peoples whose cultural practices continue today.
Wamarra recently partnered with Downer Defence to deliver critical Make Safe Road Works at the Beecroft Weapons Range in Jervis Bay. The project was designed to improve road safety for public access while ensuring effective water flow and drainage during heavy rain events.
The works included constructing table and rock drains with jute mat installation, topsoiling and hydro mulching disturbed areas, repairing eroded road sections with new gravel pavement, applying a two-coat seal, clearing and de-silting tail outs, shaping swales to manage water run-off, and installing new traffic signage, guideposts, and W-beam guardrails.
The site presented a number of challenges, including heavy rainfall—sometimes exceeding 50mm in a single day—and the need to operate heavy machinery on newly sealed roads. Careful planning and innovative measures helped us overcome these obstacles. To protect the road surface, the team avoided sharp turns with machinery, placed plywood boards beneath excavator tracks, and restricted vehicles to hardstand areas wherever possible. These simple but effective initiatives ensured the works were delivered safely and without damage to the road surface.
Despite significant weather disruptions, the project was completed ahead of schedule and included additional scope such as stormwater pit rectification and the installation of new road signage. The result is a safer, more resilient road network at Beecroft Weapons Range, built to withstand future conditions and provide reliable access to both the community and Defence operations.
