Wamarra acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands upon which we work, live and socialise. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who we recognise as Australia’s First Peoples whose cultural practices continue today.
This recognition celebrates Wamarra’s continued growth as a self-performing Aboriginal-owned contractor providing meaningful, long-term careers for Aboriginal people while delivering high-quality infrastructure outcomes for communities across the regions.
Our expansion has been shaped by the scale and complexity of our projects, including the Roads to Home program in partnership with the NSW Government and the Griffith Local Aboriginal Land Council. Through this project, Wamarra delivered critical road upgrades to improve flood resilience and accessibility at the Three-Ways Aboriginal Mission, employing five local Aboriginal people and strengthening connection to community and Country.
We’ve also expanded into the defence sector, becoming DISP certified, recognised as a Veteran Employer of Choice, and securing our first head contract with the Department of Defence in the Hunter Valley — a milestone that highlights our ability to deliver in highly regulated markets while maintaining our strong Aboriginal identity.
Today, nearly 60% of our workforce identify as Aboriginal, with over 15 local Aboriginal employees contributing to regional projects — including our first Aboriginal Site Engineer.
Beyond project delivery, Wamarra is investing in the next generation of Aboriginal talent through the Bulabul Development Program and Ignite Graduate Program, and continuing to embed cultural authenticity through annual NAIDOC Week Kup Murri celebrations and Reconciliation Week cultural tours.
Managing Director and proud Wiradjuri man, Hayden Heta, said:
“This recognition reflects our people, partners and communities who make what we do possible. Every project we deliver is about more than infrastructure — it’s about opportunity, culture and connection.”
Wamarra congratulates our fellow finalists, Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services and Tamworth Aboriginal Medical Service (TAMS-AC), for their outstanding contributions to regional communities and the advancement of Aboriginal business.
