A shared commitment to creating meaningful careers for First Nations people has seen Wamarra and the Eastern Freeway Burke to Tram Alliance (EBTA) take home the Corporate Partner Innovation in Indigenous Partnership Award at the 2025 Kinaway Business Awards.

The award recognises programs that demonstrate innovation, measurable impact and long-term sustainability in their partnerships with Aboriginal businesses and communities.

Together, Wamarra and EBTA have developed an innovative employment and training initiative designed to embed First Nations people within one of Victoria’s largest infrastructure projects. The program connects participants with hands-on experience, tailored development plans and cultural support, creating a pathway to long-term, sustainable careers in construction.

Since launch, 11 Wamarra team members have been embedded in EBTA’s site team, including 5 new candidates, with expansion underway across key subcontractors. By the end of the year, the partnership aims to create 20 full-time roles for Aboriginal people, delivering both economic and social impact.

Beyond employment, the program’s success lies in its co-design process, led by Wamarra Managing Director Hayden Heta, EBTA Lifting Superintendent Craig Kenward, Wamarra Superintendent Chris Oudy and Senior Social Inclusion Advisor Therese Dalakian-Favaloro.

Together, they ensured each participant was placed in the right role, received wraparound mentoring, and had access to training aligned with their career aspirations.

Our Bulabul Leadership Program further supports participants’ professional growth, fostering emerging Aboriginal leaders across the industry.

“This partnership is a true example of what can be achieved when businesses come together with purpose and respect,” said Hayden Heta, Managing Director at Wamarra. “We’re proud to see this recognition for our people, our partners and the difference we’re making together.”

The Kinaway Business Awards celebrate Aboriginal business excellence across Victoria, recognising organisations that drive positive change through innovation, collaboration and community impact.
