NAIDOC Week 2025: Celebrating strength, vision and legacy

This NAIDOC Week, we walked proudly in the footsteps of those who came before us, carrying their strength forward as we continue building pathways for the next generation.

The 2025 theme, ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy’, speaks deeply to who we are at Wamarra. It reminds us that the next generation is not only the leaders of tomorrow but the heartbeat of today. And that everything we do is grounded in wisdom of our ancestors and the resilience of our culture.

Coming together for our fifth annual Kup Murri

To celebrate this special week, we came together for our annual Kup Murri – a cultural tradition that brings mob and community together to honour Country, connection and each other.

Before the sun rose on Wadawurrung Country, the fire was lit. Our team prepared the underground earth over the same way our ancestors taught us – slow, careful and full of meaning. Kup Murri is our meal, our ceremony and our storytelling. It’s a time to honour those who paved the way and to share that spirit with everyone walking beside us.

We welcomed over 200 people – from family, industry partners and the wider Symal Group to join us in sharing food, culture and knowledge.

We opened with a powerful performance from Ganga Giri, a proud Palawa man whose didgeridoo rhythms echoes across the land, warming up the day with sound and spirit. Dinawan’s Connections followed, with generations of dancers travelling all the way from Wagga Wagga to share their stories through movement. Among them stood the son of Hayden Heta, Managing Director – a moment that beautifully captures the theme of legacy being lived.

Under the marquee, sisters Georgia and Olivia from WUDTJAMEEN and proud Wiradjuri woman Katrina Heta guided guests through the traditional weaving practice – quiet, hands-on learning that connects stories, Country and culture in every loop.

As the Kup Murri was unearthed and the smell filled the air, the sense of pride, warmth and togetherness was felt by all.

We believe culture should lead in everything we do – from the way we show up for our people, to how we operate on site and in the office. Kup Murri is one of the ways we live that belief.

This day felt like home. Like tradition held strong. Like the future was in good hands.

We’re proud to continue walking this path and building better futures with culture first and legacy always guiding the way.
